SUMMARY:Forming and Leading Psychotherapy Groups: An Introductory Learning Opportunity - Mick Landaiche\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:This\, online CPD course is designed to build the confidence of psychotherapy practitioners who wish to facilitate effective psychotherapy groups.  Limited to 10 participants\, it will offer a highly participative learning experience within which we will explore key concepts\, skills\, and practical issues associated with setting up and running therapy groups.  Additionally\, the course seeks to increase participants’ understanding and application of group theory in relation to common group processes and to challenge the long-held belief in the superiority of individual therapy over the restorative power of groups to help clients overcome alienation and isolation.  Ideally\, this course (one of two) will foster an ongoing conversation within our professional community that will support the development of a more robust system of resources for ongoing learning about group work. \nThe course will be held fortnightly on Wednesday evenings from 19:00h to 20:30h.  Participants are expected to attend all six sessions\, starting 18 January 2023\, with subsequent meeting dates on 01 February\, 15 February\, 01 March\, 15 March\, and 29 March. \nThis online course will be held via Zoom.  Participants will be required to have their cameras on during each course session\, and we ask each person to attend from a private space where others cannot hear the discussions that will occur during the sessions.  The course meetings will not be recorded. \n \n  \nMichel (Mick) Landaiche III\, Ph.D. has practiced for over 30 years as a psychotherapist and group facilitator\, largely from the object relations and family systems perspectives.  He also provides training and supervision for counselors\, therapists\, and organizational consultants in his hometown\, Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, USA\, as well as in Europe.  He is the author of Groups in Transactional Analysis\, Object Relations\, and Family Systems: Studying Ourselves in Collective Life. \nThe courses are open to those from the psychotherapy field and\, as they are already over-subscribed\, are only open to IARTA members. \nCost £150.00

SUMMARY:A Transcultural and Inter-Sectional Ego State Model of the Self: The Influence of Transcultural and Intersectional Identity on Self and Other. Bought alive in self and in the therapeutic dyad - Victoria Baskerville (She//Her)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will present a transcultural and intersectional Ego State model considering the influence of transculture and intersectional identity on self and other. The model considers the intersect and interplay between race\, gender\, and other cultural selves\, accounting for the complexity of cultural experience and narrative. Through enquiry of cultural selves and through mapping on an Ego State Model\, we can develop more insight into intersectional identity\, including how privilege and oppression is manifested in self and enacted in the world\, how we may reflect on and locate cultural impasse\, unconscious bias\, generational oppression\, white privilege\, othering\, and power dynamics. Victoria will reflect on a dialogue with a colleague JR\, where both were called to name and account for their differences. \nParticipants will be invited to consider their transcultural experience and locate their intersectional identity\, thus accounting for power dynamics and enactment in the therapeutic dyad. This workshop follows on from the earlier workshop (though previous attendance is not necessary) giving time to exploring the Ego State model\, intersectional identity and the enactment of systemic power dynamics in the therapeutic dyad. \nVictoria has been practicing as a Transactional Analyst Psychotherapist\, supervisor and trainer for over 20 years\, based in multi -diverse East London.\nThree years ago\, she founded TA East London Institute\, which is housed in a library and community building in the heart of the urban community. Integral to the training is difference\, cultural diversity and intersectionality\, bringing counselling and psychotherapy into social and political context. Victoria is the chair of the Social Engagement Committee for the ITAA\, facilitates a focus group on intersectionality and is leading a research project on Inclusivity and Exclusivity in training with a bursary awarded by the UKCP. \n  \nThis workshop is open to all qualifications and all fields. \nIARTA Members £30 – Non-members £60 \nTicket sales will end Friday 17th March at 12 noon.

SUMMARY:The Ethics of Self Disclosure – A Panel Discussion With - Ray Little\, Karen Minikin and Carole Shadbolt
DESCRIPTION:Working within a two-person psychology has been the major explorative work in relational psychotherapy\, including Relational Transactional Analysis in recent years. For some therapists sharing their emotional responses was not considered part of the therapeutic relationship and kept apart from it. The therapist’s personal responses were traditionally considered as part of their supervision and personal therapy and it was seen as inappropriate to share these with clients. \nIn the last 30 – 40 years\, there has been growing recognition that as therapists\, our responses\, including our vulnerabilities and fallibilities\, are inevitably evoked and are co-created within the work. Self-disclosure of these phenomena is considered an important aspect in the pursuit of a relational understanding of ourselves and our clients together – moving towards the goal of the transformation of clients’ lives. This change of the therapist’s position in relation to the client is seen to enhance the experience of mutual dialogue and the dynamics of co-regulation and co-creativity. \n  \nThe self-disclosure debate has brought important ethical questions which we will consider in this webinar. Accounting for power dynamics is central to ethical practice\, thus we will consider the following questions; \nWhat are the principles and ethics involved in the therapist’s consideration of whether or not to self-disclose? \nHow do we account for the asymmetry in terms of responsibility for the process? \n  \nIs the permission to be vulnerable a validation of the therapist’s humanity or an open gateway for oppressive practice? \nIs self-disclosure an over-used technique? \nHow might the theories of self-disclosure be used defensively? \n  \n  \nThis workshop is targeted at all qualifications from the psychotherapy field.                \nIARTA members £25 – Non-members £50 \nTickets Sales will end on Friday 17th Feb at 12 noon \n

SUMMARY:IARTA's Annual Conference 2022 with Karen J. Maroda\, Ph.D - Online Event - Saturday 26th Nov
DESCRIPTION:This year IARTA’s Annual Conference will be an Online Event – 26th November 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm GMT \nThe therapist’s vulnerability and its implications for treatment. Karen J. Maroda\, Ph.D \nWhat are the early childhood experiences that therapists have in common and how does this affect our way of thinking\, feeling and behaving with our clients?  This presentation focuses on both the strengths and weaknesses that arise from being the “healing other” in our families of origin.  To what extent do we avoid conflict\, remain too passive\, and infantilize our patients because of our own childhood roles? Do we use our ability to be sensitive and empathic too exclusively\, avoiding confrontation and negative feedback? \nThis presentation focuses on our often-neglected needs\, desires\, fears and defences\, offering a model of working with clients that underscores vulnerability in the service of promoting the client’s growth and sense of agency. This workshop will include a keynote and large and small group discussions. \nKaren J. SUMMARY:A Relational Approach to working with Confusion and Deconfusion - Heather Fowlie TSTA
DESCRIPTION:This seminar provides the opportunity to discuss a relational approach to working with confusion based on a T AJ paper\, “Confusion and introjection: A model for understanding the defensive structure of the Parent and Child ego states”. \nChildhood trauma often involves experiences that have been unbearable for the young mind to assimilate. Confusion\, a child’s natural and creative response to the aftermath of that trauma\, enables them to stay connected to the caregiver on whom they depend. However\, the protective defensive system they develop to ensure continued connection\, whilst brilliant\, can also profoundly impact their relationships with themselves and others. A relational approach to deconfusion\, centers on how the therapist and client re-engage with that system to explore\, unearth\, challenge\, and deconfuse the protective defensive system and the confusion that lies at its core. \nHeather Fowlie is a TSTA working in private practice as a psychotherapist\, supervisor and trainer in Surrey. She is a founder member of IARTA and is particularly interested in integrating other models of psychotherapy\, especially object relations within a relational approach to transactional analysis. \nThis event is primarily aimed at students/trainees from the Psychotherapy Field.\nIARTA members £15 – Non- members £30.00 \nTicket sales will end Wednesday 9th November at 12 noon.

SUMMARY:The Impact of Sibling Dynamics in our Practice as Psychotherapists and Consultants - Servaas van Beekum
DESCRIPTION:Participants need to bring a photo of themselves as a child that includes their family members: all siblings with or without parents.\nIn this workshop\, I will present insights into the vertical paradigm\, central to Freud’s theoretical framework\, and the reasons why it has become the dominant perspective in psychotherapy\, in consulting and in supervision. I will present the history and development of the horizontal (sibling) perspective and the reasons why it has recently gained traction as an important\, yet often overlooked\, perspective in our clinical work. \nServaas van Beekum is a social scientist with a special interest in analytic\, systemic\, and humanistic approaches in psychotherapy and consulting. He is a past president of both EAA and ITAA and a founding member of international associations for supervision and of associations that study unconscious processes in groups and organizations. He has written over 30 articles and book chapters and was awarded the 2015 Eric Berne Memorial Award for his work to bring back the concept of the unconscious into transactional analysis. He is active as a psychotherapist\, corporate psychologist\, and strategy consultant. After being born\, raised\, educated\, and having worked in Europe\, Servaas moved to Sydney some 20+ years ago\, rebuilding and continuing his practice. Since Covid\, he has moved most of his international teaching and workshopping online. \nThis event is open to all fields and all levels of qualification.  \nTicket sales will end on 22/July/2022 at 12 pm

SUMMARY:Transcultural and Intersectional Self-Victoria Baskerville TSTA
\nVictoria will reflect on a dialogue with a colleague JR\, where both were called to name and account for their differences. In this dialogue\, cultural narrative was shared and unique differences and intersectional identities were mapped and discussed. \nParticipants will be invited to consider their transcultural experience and locate their intersectional identity\, thus accounting for power dynamics. \nVictoria Baskerville TSTA\, has been practicing as a Transactional Analyst Psychotherapist\, supervisor\, and trainer for over 20 years\, based in multi-diverse East London. Three years ago she founded TA East London Institute\, which is housed in a library and community building in the heart of the urban community. Integral to the training is difference\, cultural diversity\, and intersectionality\, bringing counselling and psychotherapy into social and political contexts. Victoria is the chair of the Social Engagement Committee for the ITAA\, facilitates a focus group on intersectionality\, and is leading a research project on Inclusivity and Exclusivity in training with a bursary awarded by the UKCP. \n  \nThis workshop is aimed at all fields and all levels.   \nTicket sales will end at noon on 06/July/2022

SUMMARY:Traversing the Fault Lines: A relational approach to the treatment of trauma -Jo Stuthridge
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis seminar provides the opportunity to discuss a relational approach to working with trauma\, based on a paper\, “Traversing the Fault lines: Trauma and Enactment”. \nTrauma often involves experiences that have been unbearable for the mind to assimilate. \nWhen emotional pain becomes overwhelming\, the psyche can shatter in an attempt to maintain sanity. The image of a fault line has become a lingering metaphor in my work with trauma\, symbolising the experience of working with dissociation\, somatic symptoms\, enactment\, and intense transference and countertransference dynamics. These ideas are drawn from my experience over 3 decades\, in working with sexual abuse and other forms of trauma. When victims and persecutors are internalised\, intense relational dynamics can unfold in the therapy dyad making this work demanding. The seminar will provide space for teaching\, discussion and includes clinical vignettes. \nJo Stuthridge MSc\, NZAP is a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst and a registered psychotherapist in New Zealand. She maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Dunedin and is director of the Physis Institute\, which offers training in transactional analysis. She has published book chapters on transactional analysis and several articles on trauma. Jo is a teaching and research associate with the Department of Psychotherapy and Counselling at Auckland University of Technology. She was a Co-editor of the Transactional Analysis Journal from 2010 – 2019. \nThis workshop is aimed at trainee/qualified practitioners\, from the psychotherapy field. \nTicket sales will end 10/June/2022 at 12 pm
