SUMMARY:Forming and Leading Psychotherapy Groups: An Introductory Learning Opportunity - Mick Landaiche\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:This\, online CPD course is designed to build the confidence of psychotherapy practitioners who wish to facilitate effective psychotherapy groups.  Limited to 10 participants\, it will offer a highly participative learning experience within which we will explore key concepts\, skills\, and practical issues associated with setting up and running therapy groups.  Additionally\, the course seeks to increase participants’ understanding and application of group theory in relation to common group processes and to challenge the long-held belief in the superiority of individual therapy over the restorative power of groups to help clients overcome alienation and isolation.  Ideally\, this course (one of two) will foster an ongoing conversation within our professional community that will support the development of a more robust system of resources for ongoing learning about group work. \nThe course will be held nearly fortnightly on Friday evenings from 18:30h to 20:00h.  Participants are expected to attend all six sessions\, starting 03 February 2023\, with subsequent meeting dates on 17 February\, 03 March\, 17 March\, 07 April\, and 14 April. \nThis online course will be held via Zoom.  Participants will be required to have their cameras on during each course session\, and we ask each person to attend from a private space where others cannot hear the discussions that will occur during the sessions.  The course meetings will not be recorded. \nMichel (Mick) Landaiche III\, Ph.D. has practiced for over 30 years as a psychotherapist and group facilitator\, largely from the object relations and family systems perspectives.  He also provides training and supervision for counselors\, therapists\, and organizational consultants in his hometown\, Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, USA\, as well as in Europe.  He is the author of Groups in Transactional Analysis\, Object Relations\, and Family Systems: Studying Ourselves in Collective Life. \nThese courses are open to those from the psychotherapy field and\, as they are already over-subscribed\, are only open to IARTA members. \nCost £150.00 \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Ethics of Self Disclosure – A Panel Discussion With - Ray Little\, Karen Minikin and Carole Shadbolt
DESCRIPTION:Working within a two-person psychology has been the major explorative work in relational psychotherapy\, including Relational Transactional Analysis in recent years. For some therapists sharing their emotional responses was not considered part of the therapeutic relationship and kept apart from it. The therapist’s personal responses were traditionally considered as part of their supervision and personal therapy and it was seen as inappropriate to share these with clients. \nIn the last 30 – 40 years\, there has been growing recognition that as therapists\, our responses\, including our vulnerabilities and fallibilities\, are inevitably evoked and are co-created within the work. Self-disclosure of these phenomena is considered an important aspect in the pursuit of a relational understanding of ourselves and our clients together – moving towards the goal of the transformation of clients’ lives. This change of the therapist’s position in relation to the client is seen to enhance the experience of mutual dialogue and the dynamics of co-regulation and co-creativity. \n  \nThe self-disclosure debate has brought important ethical questions which we will consider in this webinar. Accounting for power dynamics is central to ethical practice\, thus we will consider the following questions; \nWhat are the principles and ethics involved in the therapist’s consideration of whether or not to self-disclose? \nHow do we account for the asymmetry in terms of responsibility for the process? \n  \nIs the permission to be vulnerable a validation of the therapist’s humanity or an open gateway for oppressive practice? \nIs self-disclosure an over-used technique? \nHow might the theories of self-disclosure be used defensively? \n  \n  \nThis workshop is targeted at all qualifications from the psychotherapy field.                \nIARTA members £25 – Non-members £50 \nTickets Sales will end on Friday 17th Feb at 12 noon \n

SUMMARY:Relational Supervision with Carole Shadbolt
DESCRIPTION:This four-session\, online CPD course is designed to enable seasoned therapists and supervisors to have a conversation together and case discussions linked to relational theory and ethics and other various themes that emerge when offering relational TA supervision. \nRelational Transactional Analysis clinical practice draws on the wisdom that tells us no two therapeutic relationships are the same. each is unique to itself and requires a different response and approach. SUMMARY:A Transcultural and Inter-Sectional Ego State Model of the Self: The Influence of Transcultural and Intersectional Identity on Self and Other. Bought alive in self and in the therapeutic dyad - Victoria Baskerville (She//Her)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will present a transcultural and intersectional Ego State model considering the influence of transculture and intersectional identity on self and other. The model considers the intersect and interplay between race\, gender\, and other cultural selves\, accounting for the complexity of cultural experience and narrative. Through enquiry of cultural selves and through mapping on an Ego State Model\, we can develop more insight into intersectional identity\, including how privilege and oppression is manifested in self and enacted in the world\, how we may reflect on and locate cultural impasse\, unconscious bias\, generational oppression\, white privilege\, othering\, and power dynamics. Victoria will reflect on a dialogue with a colleague JR\, where both were called to name and account for their differences. \nParticipants will be invited to consider their transcultural experience and locate their intersectional identity\, thus accounting for power dynamics and enactment in the therapeutic dyad. This workshop follows on from the earlier workshop (though previous attendance is not necessary) giving time to exploring the Ego State model\, intersectional identity and the enactment of systemic power dynamics in the therapeutic dyad. \nVictoria has been practicing as a Transactional Analyst Psychotherapist\, supervisor and trainer for over 20 years\, based in multi -diverse East London.\nThree years ago\, she founded TA East London Institute\, which is housed in a library and community building in the heart of the urban community. Integral to the training is difference\, cultural diversity and intersectionality\, bringing counselling and psychotherapy into social and political context. Victoria is the chair of the Social Engagement Committee for the ITAA\, facilitates a focus group on intersectionality and is leading a research project on Inclusivity and Exclusivity in training with a bursary awarded by the UKCP. \n  \nThis workshop is open to all qualifications and all fields. \nIARTA Members £30 – Non-members £60 \nTicket sales will end Friday 17th March at 12 noon.

SUMMARY:Alienation: Radical and Relational Perspectives Karen Minikin
DESCRIPTION:Alienation is rooted in Marxist philosophy and is the premise for the cause of psychological and social difficulties.  It has been a key idea in explaining a missing element in relational transference theories. The theory of alienation has accounted for the important and critical role that systemic oppression plays in creating distress\, which has helped me better understand how power dynamics operate intersubjectively. \nDrawing on illustrations and discussion we have the opportunity to explore ideas such as traumatic narcissism\, (Shaw\, 2015) and extractive introjection\, (Bollas\, 1987). This will be a theory and clinical discussion which could help contribute to decolonising thinking. In particular to highlighting how a normative mindset can be enacted clinically and in supervision. \nKaren Minikin is a psychotherapist\, supervisor and trainer (TSTA (P)) currently working in West Somerset and Devon.  She draws on history with personal life experience and uses this in relating to help integrate the psychodynamics of politics and power within a relational framework. She has written on these themes in chapters to books and articles. These include contributions to the Transactional Analysis Journal and Psychotherapy and Politics International\, currently edited by Keith Tudor. \nThis group is open to all qualifications from all fields.   \nIARTA members £15 – Non-members £30\n \nTicket sales will close on Friday 31st March at 12 noon. \nPlease note this workshop will be recorded. \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event.

SUMMARY:Ego States and Projective Identification - Alistair Berlin
DESCRIPTION:This online workshop will be a presentation of new theory from the recently published TAJ article: Ego States and Projective Identification: A Six Stage Relational Methodology. It will offer a simple and clear understanding of the process of projective identification by considering its three distinct stages. The stages will be visually represented and brought to life through three new ego state diagrams. They will also be illustrated by selected video clips from TV and film which show what the process of projective identification can look like. A relational methodology for working with projective identification will then be presented and explored. The workshop will include group discussions and exercises. \nAlistair is a PTSTA (psychotherapy) who maintains a private practice as a psychotherapist and supervisor in London. He trained at the Metanoia Institute and has taught there for the past two years. His theoretical and clinical focus is on a present-centred\, relational approach to psychotherapy with long-term clients. He is particularly interested in writing about and teaching relational TA theory in a way that is accessible and usable in practice. \nThis group is open to all qualifications from the psychotherapy field.   \nIARTA members £15 – Non-members £30 \nTicket sales will end Wednesday 12th April at 12 noon. \nPlease note this workshop will be recorded. \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event.

SUMMARY:From Enactment to Play - Jessica Benjamin
DESCRIPTION:This workshop discusses the difference between play and enactment as dramatic interactive forms as well as the movement between the two. Play takes the position of the Third to allow meta-communication and the performance of recognition while sustaining paradox between opposing propositions (real and not real; repetition and repair). The paradoxical holds both repetition of past injury and potential repair\, allowing what is painful or scary to be felt as both real and not real. In this sense play becomes a means of moving out of the dissociated drama of the enactment. \nIn using the terminology of the Third\, I focus on how the co-created movement between “Us” begins to be experienced as a joint venture—in this sense play. The essential element of procedural right brain rhythmicity is balanced with the necessary differentiating aspect of recognition.  We are not identical yet we connect to one another. At the same time we perform recognition in action\, resolving enactments through meta-communication in awareness. \n \nJessica Benjamin is a supervising faculty member of the New York University Postdoctoral Psychology program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and at the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies where she is a founder and board member.  She has been part of the relational psychoanalytic movement from its inception and is known for her integration of clinical psychoanalytic and development theory with social thought\, particularly feminist theory. She is the author of numerous books and papers. In 2015 she was awarded the Hans Kilian prize for meta-humanistic studies in Bochum\, Germany. \nThis group is open to all qualifications from the psychotherapy field.   \nIARTA Members £50 – Non-members £100 \nTicket sales will end Saturday 27th May at 12 noon \nPlease note this workshop will be recorded. \nThe Zoom Link wieventll be sent out to all participants the day before the event.

SUMMARY:The Ethics of Self Disclosure – A Panel Discussion Ray Little\, Karen Minikin and Carole Shadbolt with Heather Fowlie (Ch)
Self-disclosure of these phenomena is considered an important aspect in the pursuit of a relational understanding of ourselves and our clients together – moving towards the goal of the transformation of client’s lives. This change of the therapist’s position in relation to the client is seen to enhance the experience of mutual dialogue and the dynamics of co-regulation and co-creativity. \nThe self-disclosure debate has brought important ethical questions which we will consider in this webinar. Accounting for power dynamics is central to ethical practice\, thus we will consider the following questions: – What are the principles and ethics involved in the therapist’s consideration of whether or not to self-disclose? How do we account for the asymmetry in terms of responsibility for the process? Is the permission to be vulnerable a validation of the therapist’s humanity or an open gateway for oppressive practice?  Is self-disclosure an over-used technique? How might the theories of self-disclosure be used defensively? \n  \nRay Little is a psychotherapist\, supervisor and trainer based in Edinburgh\, Scotland and is a founding member of IARTA. He has been working as a psychotherapist for over thirty years. The therapeutic focus for Ray is with the transference-countertransference relationship\, with the therapeutic method primarily focused on the here-&-now of the therapeutic dyad. Ray won the Eric Berne Memorial Award in 2019 “in recognition of an original and highly significant theoretical and practical contribution made to the field of transactional analysis” (ITAA). This award was made specifically in recognition of three articles\, including one entitled: Ego State Relational Units and Resistance to Change (2006). \n  \nCarole Shadbolt MSc\, (Psych).CTA TSTA CQSW Dip.App. Soc.Sci Dip Supervision UKCP Registered Psychotherapist. SUMMARY:Relational Trauma & Applied Relational Theory - Mica Douglas
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the application of relational theory using illustrative examples from client work. The examples given will demonstrate how relational transactional analysis and related theories can be utilised to offer a different relational experience to clients who have suffered trauma in significant early relationships. \nThere will be an opportunity for participants to reflect on how they may be using themselves in client work to offer a different and transformational experience to clients by working in the transference. We will also consider how as relational therapists we can stretch further into the principles of relational work. \nThe workshop will not be recorded to protect the free discussion of the work we do. It is suitable for trainees and people who want to build their confidence in the application of relational TA theory. Therapeutic examples used have all been agreed with the clients concerned and their identities have been protected. \nDr. Mica Douglas (CTA\, TSTA and MASW) is a member of IARTA’s Steering Group. She has taught at Metanioa Institute\, The Berne and TA East and specialises in working with early trauma and emotional abandonment. \n  \n  \nThis workshop is targeted at all qualifications from the \npsychotherapy fields and will not be recorded.    \n£15 members and £30.00 non-members. \nTicket sales will close on Wed 19th July at 12 noon.  \n

SUMMARY:What happens when autism is named in the family? - Tess Elliott
DESCRIPTION:This three-session CPD course will take place on Oct 30th\, Nov 20th\, and Dec 11th. \nThis course is designed to offer the opportunity to explore the impact on life when a family member identifies/is identified as autistic. By drawing from personal and clinical examples we will bring life to this model. \n\n\n\nTess Elliott MSc (Psych) TSTA (P)\, CTA\, Cert Ed. SUMMARY:Ego States – A Round Table Discussion Heather Fowlie\, Adrienne Lee\, Charlotte Sills and Keith Tudor
DESCRIPTION:Berne drew on many different influences while developing his thinking about ego states\, particularly during the early days of expounding transactional analysis theory. By the time of his death\, in 1970\, he had presented several variations of his original structural ego state model\, which was typical of the creative\, integrative\, and developmental approach to theory that defined him. \nMaybe an unavoidable consequence of his creativity\, however\, Berne seemed unconcerned by the inconsistencies that began to appear as he made these creative\, albeit contradictory leaps\, particularly around the way that he thought about the second-order structure(s) and the nature of the Adult Ego State. Berne’s early death meant that these discrepancies were never addressed by him. As a result\, and no doubt inspired by both his creativity and creative leaps\, Berne inspired those who came after him to keep advancing and clarifying his original ideas. \nEach member of this Round Table Discussion has been thus inspired and so will talk and critique together the ways in which they have subsequently made sense of and adopted a model or models of ego states that helps them to think about and anchor their work. \nHeather Fowlie is a TSTA working in private practice as a psychotherapist\, supervisor\, and trainer in Surrey. She is a founder member of IARTA and is particularly interested in integrating other models of psychotherapy\, especially object relations within a relational approach to transactional analysis. \n  \n  \nAdrienne Lee is a TSTA\, UKCP Registered Psychotherapist\, and Master Practitioner in NLP. She has been practising as a psychotherapist for over 30 years and centrally involved in the development of TA in Britain from its earliest beginnings. Originally trained by the late Professor John Allaway\, she is a founder member and past Chair of the UK’s Institute of Transactional Analysis (ITA). She also served in many committee posts in the ITA and the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP)\, and is a past President of the European Association of TA (EATA). In 2010\, she was awarded the EATA Gold Medal\, given for “outstanding services to TA in Europe”. \nCharlotte Sills is a psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice\, Visiting Professor at Middlesex University\, and Professor of Coaching at Ashridge Business School. Amongst her many publications are Transactional Analysis – A Relational Perspective with Helena Hargaden (Routledge 2002) for which they were awarded the Eric Berne Memorial Award in 2007. In the same year\, Charlotte was awarded the EATA gold medal for services to the TA community. \n  \nKeith Tudor\, PhD\, CQSW\, Dip. Psychotherapy\, TSTA(P) is a professor of psychotherapy at Auckland University of Technology\, Aotearoa New Zealand. He was a founder member of the IARTA and contributed to the formulation of its relational principles. He has a small private practice in West Auckland as a health care provider and transactional analyst\, and an international wider practice online offering psychotherapy\, supervision\, and training. \n  \nThis workshop is open to all qualifications and will focus mainly on the psychotherapy field\, although other fields may find the discussion of interest.   \n£20 members/£40.00 non-members. \nPlease note this workshop will be recorded. \nTicket sales will close on Wednesday 8th November at 12 noon. \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event.
