SUMMARY:Ego States – A Round Table Discussion Heather Fowlie\, Adrienne Lee\, Charlotte Sills and Keith Tudor
DESCRIPTION:Berne drew on many different influences while developing his thinking about ego states\, particularly during the early days of expounding transactional analysis theory. By the time of his death\, in 1970\, he had presented several variations of his original structural ego state model\, which was typical of the creative\, integrative\, and developmental approach to theory that defined him. \nMaybe an unavoidable consequence of his creativity\, however\, Berne seemed unconcerned by the inconsistencies that began to appear as he made these creative\, albeit contradictory leaps\, particularly around the way that he thought about the second-order structure(s) and the nature of the Adult Ego State. Berne’s early death meant that these discrepancies were never addressed by him. As a result\, and no doubt inspired by both his creativity and creative leaps\, Berne inspired those who came after him to keep advancing and clarifying his original ideas. \nEach member of this Round Table Discussion has been thus inspired and so will talk and critique together the ways in which they have subsequently made sense of and adopted a model or models of ego states that helps them to think about and anchor their work. \nHeather Fowlie is a TSTA working in private practice as a psychotherapist\, supervisor\, and trainer in Surrey. She is a founder member of IARTA and is particularly interested in integrating other models of psychotherapy\, especially object relations within a relational approach to transactional analysis. \n  \n  \nAdrienne Lee is a TSTA\, UKCP Registered Psychotherapist\, and Master Practitioner in NLP. She has been practising as a psychotherapist for over 30 years and centrally involved in the development of TA in Britain from its earliest beginnings. Originally trained by the late Professor John Allaway\, she is a founder member and past Chair of the UK’s Institute of Transactional Analysis (ITA). She also served in many committee posts in the ITA and the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP)\, and is a past President of the European Association of TA (EATA). In 2010\, she was awarded the EATA Gold Medal\, given for “outstanding services to TA in Europe”. \nCharlotte Sills is a psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice\, Visiting Professor at Middlesex University\, and Professor of Coaching at Ashridge Business School. Amongst her many publications are Transactional Analysis – A Relational Perspective with Helena Hargaden (Routledge 2002) for which they were awarded the Eric Berne Memorial Award in 2007. In the same year\, Charlotte was awarded the EATA gold medal for services to the TA community. \n  \nKeith Tudor\, PhD\, CQSW\, Dip. Psychotherapy\, TSTA(P) is a professor of psychotherapy at Auckland University of Technology\, Aotearoa New Zealand. He was a founder member of the IARTA and contributed to the formulation of its relational principles. SUMMARY:Queer identities and GSRD inclusive practice - Victoria Baskerville (She/Her)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will reflect on Queer identities including Trans\, Non-binary\, and gender fluid identities\, and working across all GSRD\, Gender Sex Relationship\, and Diversity. The importance of pronouns will be explored.\nQueer theory will be mused\, calling for dialogue around the evolving of social and political constructs. We will reflect on the limits of the binary and the Trans and neuro-divergent movement leading the way for autonomy. \nVictoria Baskerville has been practicing as a Transactional Analyst Psychotherapist\, supervisor\, and trainer for over 20 years\, based in multi-diverse East London. Five years ago\, she founded TA East London Institute\, which is housed in a community building in the heart of the urban community. What do we mean by it and how does it affect our work? \nThe conference revolves around a panel discussion between the TA practitioners mentioned above and will include facilitated discussion groups and plenty of time for questions\, thoughts\, ideas\, and considerations. \nDeepak Dhananjaya\, is a CTA in Psychotherapy (CTA – P)\, PTSTA (Psychotherapy)\, Agile-Leadership-Organisation Coach\, and has ACC- ICF credentials. Heis the co-founder of AgileSattva Consulting that focuses on organisation development and transformation organisation Bangalore\, India. He is an engineer and has earned Masters in Sexuality and Sexual counselling. He works with marginalised communities\, families\, and individual client settings. His work is deeply informed by transactional analysis\, socio- cultural-political frame of reference which reflects in his writings and practice. He believes in compassionate activism. \nKaren Minikin is a psychotherapist\, supervisor\, and trainer (TSTA (P)) currently working in West Somerset and Devon. She draws on history with personal life experience and uses this in relating to help integrate the psychodynamics of politics and power within a relational framework. She has written on these themes in chapters to books and articles and is expecting her book: Radical-Relational Perspectives in TA Psychotherapy to be available from the 21st of September 2023. \n  \nKatherine Murphy\, a New Zealand-born Londoner\, is a psychotherapist\, supervisor and educator working in independent practice in West London. Existing literature on the therapy of eating and weight focuses on the eating behaviour rather than the issues underlying the behaviour. This workshop runs over two evenings\, both of which must be attended. The first introduces the Nourish Framework and the second considers its practical application. \nMandy Atkinson is passionate about eating\, shape and weight. Her work as a psychotherapist and supervisor is informed by both her lived experience\, identifying as a ‘fat’ woman and her clinical experience. As a psychotherapist\, she works with clients with a range of eating and weight issues and with eating disorders. She provides relational psychotherapy\, supervision and training on weight and eating. She also undertakes research\, writes and publishes on eating\, shape and weight. SUMMARY:Deconstruction of theory and practice through an intersectional lens - Victoria Baskerville (She//Her)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will bring alive Victoria’s recent article and thinking on inclusive theory and practice. ‘Historically counselling and psychotherapy and indeed transactional analysis has been influenced by western/northern hemisphere concepts and ideology. Thus\, largely offering a White\, individualistic\, heteronormative\, neurotypical\, middle-class\, and binary lens to theory\, practice\, and curriculums. \nThis article aims to offer a model to deconstruct and reconstruct\, and begin to decolonise our theories and curriculums\, thus facilitating the reconstruction of theories with an intersectional lens.’ This workshop will explore the ideas of deconstruction theory and thus the dismantling of social constructs\, language\, and meaning through a historical\, social\, cultural\, and political lens. \nA model will be offered to deconstruct and then reconstruct theory\, aiming to invite representation of all Intersectional identities\, thus accounting for power dynamics and furthering inclusive theory and practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVictoria Baskerville has been practicing as a Transactional Analyst Psychotherapist\, supervisor\, and trainer for over 20 years\, based in multi-diverse East London. DESCRIPTION:In our first in-person event since the lockdown\, Dr Galit Atlas and Carole Shadbolt will discuss ideas from Galit’s latest book “Emotional Inheritance: A Therapist\, her patients and the Legacy of Trauma”.  \nThey will talk\, among other things\, about how inherited trauma can be unconsciously transmitted from one generation to the next\, often in quiet but far-reaching ways\, and how as part of this process\, it comes to rest in our bodies and our minds\, where it is felt and responded to as if it were our own. \nGalit will then leave and relational psychotherapists\, Judy Yellin\, Aaron Balick\, and Carole Shadbolt will continue the discussion together and with the audience\, exploring what this means for the practice of psychotherapy\, including finding ways of uncovering\, attenuating\, and giving voice to the secrets that are currently being hosted inside of us and that our ancestors have held for so long. \nThere will be plenty of time for questions and comments and the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of Galit’s book. \n  \nDr Galit Atlas is a psychoanalyst and clinical supervisor in private practice in Manhattan. She is a clinical assistant professor on the faculty of the New York University Postdoctoral and psychotherapy programs. She has published numerous articles and book chapters that focus primarily on gender and sexuality and lectures throughout the United States and internationally. Galit was the recipient of the Andre’ Francois Research Award and the NADTA Research Award. She is a senior editor of the book series New Directions in Contemporary Psychoanalysis from Confer Books and Karnac Books. She has served on the board of directors of the Division of Psychoanalysis (39) of the American Psychological Association and on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Dialogues and Psychoanalytic Perspectives. \n  \nCarole Shadbolt lives and practices in the United Kingdom. In a long career\, she originally trained as a social worker and worked both as a generic as well as a specialist psychiatric social worker at The Maudsley Hospital part of the Institute of Psychiatry in London. She qualified as a Transactional Analyst Metanoia under the tutelage of Petruska Clarkson\, Sue Fish and Maria Gilbert. Carole worked as a tutor for many years at Metanoia Institute on their MSc in Relational Transactional Analysis programme.  She maintains an independent psychotherapy and supervisory practice in Oxfordshire. A relational psychotherapist by instinct\, Carole is a published author and a founder member of the International Association of Relational Transactional Analysis and serves on their Steering group. She has been “out” since the late seventies and her abiding interest is in LGBTQ + issues and diversity. I was President of the ITAA from 2010 to 2015. Over the years\, my work has led me to an appreciation of spirituality as an innate and natural dimension of human psychology. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, the subject of soul murder will be discussed. Soul murder is not a diagnosis\, it is a crime. Following on from the work of von Feuerbach (Kaspar Hauser)\, Freud and particularly Leonard Shengold\, not to mention literary examinations of soul murder by Orwell\, Ibsen and others\, Paul Williams will seek to extend some of these ideas in their relationship to trauma and psychosis. Ways of working with the soul murdered individual will be considered. \nPaul Williams trained as a psychoanalyst with The British Psychoanalytical Society where he was a Training Analyst. He won the Rosenfeld Prize for the treatment of severe disturbance. He was Joint Editor-in-Chief\, with Glen Gabbard\, of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis between 2002 and 2007. He worked as a Consultant Psychotherapist in the National Health Service in Belfast\, Northern Ireland\, treating traumatized patients. He now lives and works in private psychoanalytic practice in Northern California. He has published many papers and books on the subject of severe disturbance and psychosis. He recently produced an acclaimed experimental trilogy on severe disturbance seen from the inside: The Fifth Principle (Routledge\, 2010). SUMMARY:Understanding and working with Chronic Shame - Dr. Patricia DeYoung
DESCRIPTION:Dr. DeYoung will explain three faces of shame — dysregulated\, deficit\, and dissociated — and discuss how to work relationally with each. All clients who suffer chronic shame have a history of feeling self-disintegrating in the presence of dysregulating others. For some\, ongoing dysregulation is a primary problem. Their treatment requires solid\, fearless\, compassionate\, containing presence and the ability to help them mentalize fragmented states. For other clients\, the experience of self-deficit is the primary problem. Their treatment requires making oneself available for interpersonal connectedness\, self-object transferences\, and working through eruptions of in-session shame that accompanies empathic breaks. For a third group\, the primary problem is their total dissociation of shame that leads to deep disconnections within their self-experience\, an incapacity for vulnerability and genuine empathy\, and inauthentic\, projective relationships with others. Treatment requires patient’s “large empathy” for their dilemma\, nurturing whatever bits of vulnerability appear\, and trusting non-linear change processes. SUMMARY:Personality Differences and Their Implications for Psychotherapy - Dr. Nancy Mcwilliams
DESCRIPTION:Many of us chose a vocation in psychotherapy because we were fascinated with individual differences. Research on psychotherapy supports this focus\, in that personality and relationship variables are consistently found to have more influence on treatment outcome than type of treatment. This seminar will conceptualize personality differences as they have emerged from clinical experience and empirical research rather than according to the trait-based personality disorder categories in the DSM and other psychiatric classifications that have influenced contemporary paradigms for psychological treatment. It will emphasize subjective as well as objective means of appreciating patients’ individuality\, including a disciplined attention to countertransference reactions\, mutual enactments\, cultural and subcultural differences\, and context.
