SUMMARY:Nourish: Eating\, Shape and Weight Through the Relational Lens - Mandy Atkinson (part 2)
DESCRIPTION:The second and final part of this CPD series. \nFocusing on the underlying shame as a foundation and reflecting on existing literature and empirical research\, this two-part workshop introduces a relational framework for working with disordered eating. \nEating\, body\, and weight issues are becoming more and more common and evident in private practice\, often as secondary presentations. Existing literature on the therapy of eating and weight focuses on the eating behaviour rather than the issues underlying the behaviour. This workshop runs over two evenings\, both of which must be attended. The first introduces the Nourish Framework and the second considers its practical application. \nMandy Atkinson is passionate about eating\, shape\, and weight. Her work as a psychotherapist and supervisor is informed by both her lived experience\, identifying as a ‘fat’ woman\, and her clinical experience. As a psychotherapist\, she works with clients with a range of eating and weight issues and with eating disorders. She provides relational psychotherapy\, supervision\, and training on weight and eating. She also undertakes research\, writes\, and publishes on eating\, shape\, and weight. Her recent journal article Nourish: A Framework for Nourishing Eating-Disordered Clients Using a Structural and Relational Methodology was published in the Transactional Analysis Journal in April 2023. \n  \nThese workshops are open to all those who are working with clients. Places are limited and so early booking is advised. \nThe cost £30.00 for members\, £60.00 for non-members. \n A recording of the event will be made which you can purchase by signing onto the event\, but please note\, we are only able to issue CPD certificates for those who attend the actual workshop. \nTicket sales will close on Monday 15th January at 12 noon. \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event.

SUMMARY:Deconstruction of theory and practice through an intersectional lens - Victoria Baskerville (She//Her)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will bring alive Victoria’s recent article and thinking on inclusive theory and practice. ‘Historically counselling and psychotherapy and indeed transactional analysis has been influenced by western/northern hemisphere concepts and ideology. Thus\, largely offering a White\, individualistic\, heteronormative\, neurotypical\, middle-class\, and binary lens to theory\, practice\, and curriculums. \nThis article aims to offer a model to deconstruct and reconstruct\, and begin to decolonise our theories and curriculums\, thus facilitating the reconstruction of theories with an intersectional lens.’ This workshop will explore the ideas of deconstruction theory and thus the dismantling of social constructs\, language\, and meaning through a historical\, social\, cultural\, and political lens. \nA model will be offered to deconstruct and then reconstruct theory\, aiming to invite representation of all Intersectional identities\, thus accounting for power dynamics and furthering inclusive theory and practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVictoria Baskerville has been practicing as a Transactional Analyst Psychotherapist\, supervisor\, and trainer for over 20 years\, based in multi-diverse East London. Five years ago\, she founded TA East London Institute\, which is housed in a community building in the heart of the urban community. Integral to every aspect of training is intersectionality\, bringing counselling and psychotherapy into a social and political contexts. Victoria recently completed a two year UKCP research project on Inclusivity and Exclusivity in counselling and psychotherapy training\, published in the new psychotherapist and Transactional Analyst. She is on the editorial team of the Transactional analysts and authors ‘Amplified Voices’ each quarter. She is interested in Queer theory and how Queer identities are challenging all forms of oppression. Victoria identifies as lesbian and Queer. \nThis workshop is tailored for trainers and supervisors across all fields\, and who are planning and delivering the curriculum and facilitating the deconstruction process. The aim is that trainers and supervisors will have space to reflect on inclusive practice\, accounting for representation and intersectional power dynamics. \nThis workshop will not be recorded. \nThe cost of this workshop is £15 members/£30.00 non-members. \nTicket sales will close on Wednesday 14th Feb at 12 noon. \nThe Zoom Link will be sent to all participants the day before the event.

SUMMARY:Emotional Inheritance - Galit Atlas
DESCRIPTION:In our first in-person event since the lockdown\, Dr Galit Atlas and Carole Shadbolt will discuss ideas from Galit’s latest book “Emotional Inheritance: A Therapist\, her patients and the Legacy of Trauma”. \nThey will talk\, among other things\, about how inherited trauma can be unconsciously transmitted from one generation to the next\, often in quiet but far-reaching ways\, and how as part of this process\, it comes to rest in our bodies and our minds\, where it is felt and responded to as if it were our own. \nGalit will then leave and relational psychotherapists\, Judy Yellin\, Aaron Balick\, and Carole Shadbolt will continue the discussion together and with the audience\, exploring what this means for the practice of psychotherapy\, including finding ways of uncovering\, attenuating\, and giving voice to the secrets that are currently being hosted inside of us and that our ancestors have held for so long. \nThere will be plenty of time for questions and comments and the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of Galit’s book. \n  \nDr Galit Atlas is a psychoanalyst and clinical supervisor in private practice in Manhattan. She is a clinical assistant professor on the faculty of the New York University Postdoctoral and psychotherapy programs. She has published numerous articles and book chapters that focus primarily on gender and sexuality and lectures throughout the United States and internationally. She is a senior editor of the book series New Directions in Contemporary Psychoanalysis from Confer Books and Karnac Books. She has served on the board of directors of the Division of Psychoanalysis (39) of the American Psychological Association and on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Dialogues and Psychoanalytic Perspectives. \n  \nCarole Shadbolt lives and practices in the United Kingdom. She qualified as a Transactional Analyst Metanoia under the tutelage of Petruska Clarkson\, Sue Fish and Maria Gilbert. Carole worked as a tutor for many years at Metanoia Institute on their MSc in Relational Transactional Analysis programme.  She maintains an independent psychotherapy and supervisory practice in Oxfordshire. SUMMARY:The Deeper Dimensions of Interconnectedness - A Conversation with John Heath
DESCRIPTION:In this online event\, Charlotte Sills will be interviewing John Heath about how 30 years as a psychotherapist have led him to a deeper exploration of what life is all about and what we are supposed to be doing while we have the privilege of living it! \nWe will be looking at how his approach to interconnectedness might complement relational transactional analysis. \nJohn Heath B.Sc\, M.Ed\, CTA(P)\, TSTA(P). I started my career in psychology in 1975 when I qualified as an Educational Psychologist. To extend the reach of my psychological work I began studying Transactional Analysis in the mid 1980’s. Since then I have been able to build a national and international therapy\, training and supervisory practice\, working at The Berne Institute in the UK and on several training programmes in Romania and in India. I was President of the ITAA from 2010 to 2015. Over the years\, my work has led me to an appreciation of spirituality as an innate and natural dimension of human psychology. This has many important implications for all psychological work. \nCharlotte Sills is a psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice\, Visiting Professor at Middlesex University and Professor of Coaching at Ashridge Business School. Amongst her many publications are Transactional Analysis – A Relational Perspective with Helena Hargaden (Routledge 2002) for which they were awarded the Eric Berne Memorial Award in 2007. In the same year\, Charlotte was awarded the EATA gold medal for services to the TA community. \n  \nThis workshop is open to all qualifications and fields. \nCost £15.00 members\, £30.00 non- members. \nA recording of the event will be made which you can purchase by signing onto the event\, but please note\, we are only able to issue CPD certificates for those who attend the actual workshop. \nTicket sales will close on Tuesday 12th March at 12 noon. \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event.

SUMMARY:Soul Murder: a treatable catastrophe? - Paul Williams
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, the subject of soul murder will be discussed. Soul murder is not a diagnosis\, it is a crime. Following on from the work of von Feuerbach (Kaspar Hauser)\, Freud and particularly Leonard Shengold\, not to mention literary examinations of soul murder by Orwell\, Ibsen and others\, Paul Williams will seek to extend some of these ideas in their relationship to trauma and psychosis. Ways of working with the soul murdered individual will be considered. \nPaul Williams trained as a psychoanalyst with The British Psychoanalytical Society where he was a Training Analyst. He won the Rosenfeld Prize for the treatment of severe disturbance. He was Joint Editor-in-Chief\, with Glen Gabbard\, of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis between 2002 and 2007. He worked as a Consultant Psychotherapist in the National Health Service in Belfast\, Northern Ireland\, treating traumatized patients. He now lives and works in private psychoanalytic practice in Northern California. He has published many papers and books on the subject of severe disturbance and psychosis. He recently produced an acclaimed experimental trilogy on severe disturbance seen from the inside: The Fifth Principle (Routledge\, 2010). Scum (Routledge\, 2013)\, The Authority of Tenderness (Routledge 2021). \nThis workshop is open to all qualifications and will focus mainly on the psychotherapy field\, although other fields may find the discussion of interest. \nThe cost of this workshop tickets £40 \nA recording of the event will be made which you can purchase by signing onto the event\, but please note\, we are only able to issue CPD certificates for those who attend the actual workshop. \nTicket sales will close on Saturday 20th April at 12 noon. \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event.

SUMMARY:Working relationally with Loss and Grief - Aideen O’Hagan
DESCRIPTION:This two-part workshop explores the universality of loss and grief with an emphasis on theories that have emerged over recent decades. These theories include the Dual Process Model (Stroebe & Schutz 1999) Continuing Bonds\, (Klass\, D Silverman 1996)\, and Darian Leaders’ ( 2009) ideas about mourning. These ‘maps’ are useful to help us navigate our companioning with clients in their grief. Death is part of life\, and we too experience many losses and griefs in our life – this will inform the way that we will work with others. \nWe will explore how we work relationally with our clients in their loss which includes a reinvention and re-connection to what has been lost. From Aideens’ experience with people who are bereaved and her own bereavements\, clients need to be listened to by someone whose mind has examined their own experience of loss and are able to bear witness to the multiple subjective meanings of the client’s experience. We will also look at some of the challenges in the work\, how people may get stuck in their grief\, and how we hold the frame. \nThis two-part workshop will focus mainly on the psychotherapy field\, although other fields may find the discussion of interest.  \nCost – Members£30.00 – Non- members £60.00. \nA recording of the event will be made which you can purchase by signing onto the event\, but please note\, we are only able to issue CPD certificates for those who attend the actual workshop.  \nTicket sales will end Tuesday 30th April at 12 noon \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event. \n

SUMMARY:Understanding and working with Chronic Shame - Dr. Patricia DeYoung
DESCRIPTION:Dr. DeYoung will explain three faces of shame — dysregulated\, deficit\, and dissociated — and discuss how to work relationally with each. All clients who suffer chronic shame have a history of feeling self-disintegrating in the presence of dysregulating others. For some\, ongoing dysregulation is a primary problem. Their treatment requires solid\, fearless\, compassionate\, containing presence and the ability to help them mentalize fragmented states. For other clients\, the experience of self-deficit is the primary problem. Their treatment requires making oneself available for interpersonal connectedness\, self-object transferences\, and working through eruptions of in-session shame that accompanies empathic breaks. For a third group\, the primary problem is their total dissociation of shame that leads to deep disconnections within their self-experience\, an incapacity for vulnerability and genuine empathy\, and inauthentic\, projective relationships with others. Treatment requires patient’s “large empathy” for their dilemma\, nurturing whatever bits of vulnerability appear\, and trusting non-linear change processes. In all cases\, what matters is the specific intentional quality of therapeutic being-with. \nThis workshop is open to all qualifications and will focus mainly on the psychotherapy field\, although other fields may find the discussion of interest.  £40 members/£80.00 non-members.  \nA recording of the event will be made which you can purchase by signing onto the event\, but please note\, we are only able to issue CPD certificates for those who attend the actual workshop.   \nTicket sales will end Thursday 27th June at 12 noon \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event. \n

SUMMARY:Culture\, Connection and Consciousness - Geoff Hopping

SUMMARY:Relational Trauma & Applied Relational Theory - Dr Mica Douglas
DESCRIPTION:This is the second in the series of relational case studies being presented. The workshop will explore the application of relational theory using illustrative examples from client work. The examples given will demonstrate how relational transactional analysis and related theories can be utilised to offer a different relational experience to clients who have suffered trauma in significant early relationships. \nThere will be an opportunity for participants to reflect on how they may be using themselves in client work to offer a different and transformational experience to clients by working in the transference. We will also consider how as relational therapists we can stretch further into the principles of relational work. \nThe workshop will not be recorded to protect free discussion of the work we do. It is suitable for trainees and people who want to build their confidence in the application of relational TA theory. Therapeutic examples used have all been agreed with the clients concerned and their identities have been protected. \nThis workshop is targeted at all qualifications from the psychotherapy fields and will not be recorded.    Cost – Members £15 – Non-members £30.00  \nTicket sales will end Wednesday 24 July at noon \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event.

SUMMARY:Personality Differences and Their Implications for Psychotherapy - Dr. Nancy Mcwilliams
DESCRIPTION:Many of us chose a vocation in psychotherapy because we were fascinated with individual differences. Research on psychotherapy supports this focus\, in that personality and relationship variables are consistently found to have more influence on treatment outcome than type of treatment. This seminar will conceptualize personality differences as they have emerged from clinical experience and empirical research rather than according to the trait-based personality disorder categories in the DSM and other psychiatric classifications that have influenced contemporary paradigms for psychological treatment. It will emphasize subjective as well as objective means of appreciating patients’ individuality\, including a disciplined attention to countertransference reactions\, mutual enactments\, cultural and subcultural differences\, and context. The focus will be on the practical value of understanding clients’ personalities in depth whether or not a person’s personality itself is “disordered.” Dr. McWilliams will present material from her own practice and encourage the sharing of clinical vignettes from candidates. \nThis workshop is open to all qualifications and will focus mainly on the psychotherapy field\, although other fields may find the discussion of interest.\nCost Members £40 members – Non-Members £80.00. \nA recording of the event will be made which you can purchase by signing onto the event\, but please note\, we are only able to issue CPD certificates for those who attend the actual workshop. \nTicket sales will end Thursday 12 September at noon \nThe Zoom Link will be sent out to all participants the day before the event.
