SUMMARY:Into the Mind of the Psychotherapist: When the Personal Becomes Professional - Dr. Steven Kuchuck
DESCRIPTION:In this extended workshop\, Steven Kuchuck explores the impact of the therapist’s life experience and psychological make-up on the treatment. By expanding psychoanalytic study to include an examination of events in the clinician’s childhood and adult life as well as related psychodynamic issues\, Dr. Kuchuck focuses on ways in which these experiences\, crises\, and dynamics affect both clinical choices and the tenor of the therapist’s presence in the consulting room. Related\, he looks at the relationship between the clinician’s subjectivity\, theoretical interests\, and technique\, and he explores areas of overlap and differentiation between two phenomena that are often confused; the larger issue of the therapist’s subjectivity\, and self-disclosure. \nWhen subjectivity becomes dissociated\, access to countertransference and insight into how the therapist affects the patient become limited; therapeutic data may be missed. Dr. Kuchuck therefore addresses various ways of tracking and using subjectivity in order to further the therapeutic action. He also considers the impact on the treatment of the therapist’s temperament\, conflicts around being seen or hidden\, and struggles with self-care. \nThis event is targeted at psychotherapists and counsellors. \nDr. Steven Kuchuck – Senior Consulting Editor\, Psychoanalytic Perspectives\, Co-Editor; Routledge Relational Perspectives Book Series\, Past President of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy\, faculty\, NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis\, NIP and other institutes. Dr. Kuchuck’s teaching and writing focus primarily on the clinical impact of the therapist’s subjectivity. His new book\, The Relational Revolution in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy is an introduction to and exploration of Relational psychoanalysis. In 2015 and 2016 he won the Gradiva Award for best psychoanalytic book: Clinical Implications of the Psychoanalyst’s Life Experience: When the Personal Becomes Professional and The Legacy of Sandor Ferenczi: From Ghost to Ancestor (co-edited with Adrienne Harris).
