DESCRIPTION:This workshop offers participants an opportunity to discuss a key piece of TA theory. Based on his article on the subject (published in the Transactional Analysis Journal in 2016)\, the workshop will review these concepts\, and discuss Keith’s extension of the classification of permissions. The three Ps are reconsidered not only as qualities and skills of the transactional analyst but also\, and rather\, as principles that reflect a two-person\, relational psychology and psychotherapy. \nKeith Tudor\, PhD\, CQSW\, Dip. Psychotherapy\, TSTA(P) is a professor of psychotherapy at Auckland University of Technology\, Aotearoa New Zealand. He was a founder member of the IARTA and contributed to the formulation of its relational principles. SUMMARY:Embodied Relational Therapy in TA: With and Without Touch - Edward T Novak
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will focus on the embodied relationship between client and therapist in TA therapy. We will examine ways of attending to embodied relational dynamics that become available when therapy includes a more direct focus on addressing the two bodies in the room\, with and without touch. The lecture is based in Novak’s embodied treatment model anchored in trauma theory\, body therapy\, transactional analysis and psychoanalysis. The lecture will also address the issues of risks and ethics of touch when working directly with a client’s body. Special attention will be placed on issues of embodied trauma and ways to move the client and therapist directly into embodied trauma memories where they can be analyzed\, processed\, and transformed. This transformation leads to clients experiencing their bodies in fundamentally new ways\, at both intrapersonal and relational levels. Attention will also be given to ways therapists can enhance their abilities in working relationally within embodied therapy with clients. Case vignettes that emphasize specific relational dynamics in embodied therapy will be used to enhance the connections between theory and clinical application. \nEdward T. Novak\, MA\, is the book review editor for the Transactional Analysis Journal and a member of the editorial board. He has also published numerous articles in the TAJ including articles on the use of touch in treatment. His forthcoming book\, Physical Touch in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: Transforming Trauma through Embodied Practice is being published by Routledge. He is a graduate of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies’ National Training Program in Contemporary Psychoanalysis and maintains a private practice in Akron\, Ohio.
