Event Overview
This workshop proposes a specific and systematic approach to dreamwork with transactional analysis in both counselling and psychotherapy, in both individual and group settings. Our dreamwork method draws from the dream analysis technique by James Fosshage (1997), a Kohutian psychoanalyst with a particular interest in Kernberg’s work and relational psychology. Our perspective is also inspired by Thomas Ogden’s (2005) belief that dreams connect conscious and unconscious life. In transactional analysis, Eric Berne wrote in A Layman’s Guide to Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis: “Even ordinary emotional experiences have to be ‘digested’ in some way through dreaming in order for the individual to feel well” (1968, p. 136). This innovative view is now supported by clinical evidence and neuroscientific research. Therefore, clients need to be encouraged to talk about dreams and share the emotions they experience. In our workshop we will show that finding the meaning of the dream is not the most important issue. The most important aspect is to foster an exploratory, emotional relational environment in which meanings can be co-created by the client and the therapist (or counselor) together, or by the client, the therapist (counsellor), and the therapy (counselling) group. If the relationship is a safe space, the resulting atmosphere will be conducive to discovery and reflection, thus encouraging the resurfacing of hidden, distant, or dissociated ego states and the expansion of the client’s integrating Adult.
This workshop will focus mainly on the psychotherapy field, although other fields may find the discussion of interest. Cost £18.00 members/£36.00 non- members.
