In this engaging video recorded seminar, internationally renowned psychoanalyst Dr. Nancy McWilliams explores one of the most compelling dimensions of our work: the rich and complex ways that individual personality differences shape the therapeutic process.

Many of us are drawn to psychotherapy by a deep curiosity about what makes each person unique — and research continues to show that personality and the quality of the therapeutic relationship have more impact on outcomes than the specific type of treatment used. In this recording, Dr. McWilliams reframes how we think about personality differences, drawing on decades of clinical experience and empirical insight rather than rigid, trait-based diagnostic categories such as those found in the DSM.

Listeners will gain practical tools and fresh perspectives for appreciating clients’ individuality — including ways to work with subjective material such as countertransference, mutual enactments, cultural and subcultural factors, and broader contexts. Dr. McWilliams illustrates her ideas with compelling material from her own clinical practice, providing a nuanced, humane approach to understanding personality — whether or not it is formally “disordered.”
